How to Update Themes

You have your new theme, and now you want to update it, the following tutorial explains how to update your Flothemes site.

NOTE! You’ll see a message that warns you that you’ll loose the customizations made to the theme. Only customizations/changes made to the theme files will be lost, if you are going to customize the theme files, you should use a child theme, view how to do this here.

Theme settings and custom css will remain the same. So if you didn’t change the theme’s files, then there is nothing to worry about, and you can go ahead and update them theme.

Updating your Theme

You must follow this steps in order to get updates notification for your theme.

Step 1 – Check Default Folder Name

NOTE! You MUST NOT change the default folder name. For example if you are using the Matte theme then the theme folder name is named ‘matte’ in the WordPress backend.

If you change the name for that folder, the update will not work.

If you did change the folder name, then you must use an FTP client and change it back, or login to your hosting control panel, locate that file and change it’s name. After that make sure to go to Apearance->Themes and reactivate the theme again.

Step 2 – Add Order Number

Make sure your order key is set under Flotheme->Update settings.  A common mistake is that users are using the key related to a different purchase (Usually an installation service) and because of that they do not receive updates.

You can get your order number from your account at www.flothemes.com/my-account/ and then in the orders tab:

So make sure you are using the key for the current activated theme, it should be an 8/9 digit number in the following format XXXXX-XXXX for new themes, if you purchased your theme a few years ago it will be a longer number. If you didn’t receive your order key please contact us at info@flothemes.com.

Step 3 – Check Updater Plugin is Active

Make sure Flotheme-Updater Plugin is installed. It is shipped with the theme and is a required plugin. You can install this in the plugins, area, there should be a notification that it is required. Once its added activate the plugin. If for some reason you don’t have the plugin, you can download it  from here: flothemes.com/flo-plugins/

If these steps are followed, and there is an available update for your theme, you’ll see an update notification in your WordPress backend that looks like the following:
